The Czech Republic is currently grappling with elevated river levels as heavy rains persist, particularly impacting the Šumava, Krkonoše, and Jizerské mountains. Meteorologists have issued warnings for substantial rainfall in these regions until Thursday morning, heightening concerns about potential floods.

The Vltava River in Krumlov has been a focal point, repeatedly reaching the third level of flood activity due to the heavy precipitation. The recent overnight rainfall into Wednesday exacerbated the situation, causing several rivers in the southwest of the country to swell. Notably, the Otava River rose to the third level of flood activity, and hydrometeorologists indicate that further rainfall could pose flood threats to its upper course.

Tomáš Vlasák of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute in České Budějovice emphasized the ongoing and upcoming precipitation in the Šumava, with heavier rainfall expected overnight into Thursday. The primary areas affected are anticipated to be Otava and the tributaries to Lipno, warranting heightened vigilance.

In response to the escalating situation, a flood staff convened in Sušice, where Otava was already at the second flood level on Wednesday morning. City authorities, along with firefighters and police officers, participated in monitoring the developments. Mayor Petr Mottl expressed concern about the forecasted extreme flooding risk for the following morning, urging residents around the river to stay informed and vigilant.

The Elbe River in Vestřev (Trutnov region), Bystřice in Rohoznice (Jičín region), and Cidlině in Jičín experienced the second flood level on Wednesday morning, while eight other locations declared the first flood level. Although the Elbe briefly reached the highest, third level at night in Vestřev, no significant damage has been reported so far.

As the Czech Republic grapples with rising river levels, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, issuing warnings, and urging residents to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and protect against potential flood-related risks.
