River Levels Slowly Decreasing Across Czech Republic Following Heavy Rains

After experiencing heavy rains across the Czech Republic, river levels are gradually receding, with the Labe (Elbe River) in Usti nad Labem, Decin, and Litomerice, all in northern Bohemia, still under the highest degree of flood activity, according to data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU). The second degree of flood activity remains in effect at six locations, leading to road closures, although significant damage has not been reported.

The surge in river levels occurred towards the end of last year, post-Christmas holidays, with peak levels mostly reached by Friday. The affected areas include Cesky Krumlov in southern Bohemia, where the Vltava River is at the second degree of flood activity, just below the third degree. The situation in Cesky Krumlov is influenced by the outflow from the Lipno dam, which has accumulated a substantial amount of water due to recent snowmelt and rainfall.

In Usti nad Labem, Decin, and Litomerice, where the highest degree of flood activity persists, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents and mitigate any potential damage. Fortunately, no significant harm has been reported thus far, though precautionary measures such as road closures are in place.

The Vltava River Basin company spokesperson, Hugo Roldan, indicated that in Cesky Krumlov, 120 cubic meters per second are flowing into the Lipno in the aftermath of the heavy rainfall. Roldan expects this situation to persist for some time, emphasizing that the river is expected to remain within its riverbed.

As the Czech Republic navigates through these weather-related challenges, ongoing monitoring and communication from relevant authorities, such as the CHMU, will play a crucial role in managing and mitigating the impact of changing river levels on communities and infrastructure. While the current situation does not indicate substantial damage, the resilience of local residents and the effectiveness of flood prevention measures are essential elements in ensuring the region’s safety during such weather events.
