Smog Emergency Declared in Moravian-Silesian Region as Airborne Dust Concentrations Soar

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has officially declared a smog emergency across the Moravian-Silesian region, as more than half of the monitoring stations in the area have reported elevated concentrations of airborne dust. Meteorologists highlight Ostrava and Karvinská as particularly affected, urging residents, especially seniors, young children, and those with chronic respiratory or heart conditions, to minimize outdoor activities and strenuous physical exertion.

The twelve-hour rolling average of suspended PM10 particle concentrations at over half of the monitoring stations in the region has surpassed the informational threshold of 100 micrograms per cubic meter. Meteorologists express concern, noting that a decline below this critical value is not anticipated in the 24-hour outlook. The severity of the situation prompts the declaration of a smog emergency, emphasizing the potential health risks associated with poor air quality.

To alleviate the strain on air quality, the public is strongly encouraged to opt for public transportation instead of personal vehicles. This measure aims to mitigate further pollution and limit individual contributions to the deteriorating air conditions in the region.

The smog emergency is declared until further notice, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the situation. As of now, no specific smog regulations have been announced for any part of the Moravian-Silesian region. Authorities and meteorological agencies will closely monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary, while residents are advised to stay informed and adhere to recommended measures to safeguard their health amid the prevailing smog conditions. The declaration underscores the importance of proactive measures to address air quality issues and protect the well-being of the community in the face of environmental challenges.
