South Moravian Tourism Office Utilizes Mobile Operator Data to Uncover In-Depth Tourism Insights

In a pioneering move, the South Moravian Tourism Office has harnessed mobile operator data from 2023, unveiling invaluable insights into tourism patterns across the region. This comprehensive data analysis reveals that South Moravia consistently ranks as a top destination, drawing the largest number of tourists among all Czech regions, second only to Prague. However, a notable finding is that visitors tend to spend a comparatively shorter duration in South Moravia in comparison to other regions.

Director Martina Grůzová of the Tourism Central Office for South Moravia expressed the significance of mobile operator data, stating, “The data from mobile operators allow us to better capture the domestic source regions from which people travel to South Moravia.” This nuanced approach provides a deeper understanding of travel dynamics, especially distinguishing between various accommodation types.

During the summer, South Moravia experiences an influx of over 3.5 million tourists, with a dominant 9:1 ratio of domestic to international travelers. The data further highlights that only a quarter of visitors opt for mass accommodation facilities, emphasizing the need to go beyond conventional statistics to grasp the intricacies of tourism behavior.

Contrary to the records from mass accommodation facilities, which counted just under 900,000 tourists during peak summer months, mobile data revealed the actual figure to be over 3.5 million. This significant disparity underscores the importance of leveraging mobile operator data for a more accurate representation of tourist numbers.

Key attractions like the Moravian Karst and Brno maintain stable year-round visitor numbers. However, regions such as Znojmo, Podyjí, Pálava, and the Lednice-Valtice area experienced a substantial uptick in visits during the summer and grape harvesting seasons. The impact of wine tourism on the region’s visitor numbers during the third quarter is particularly noteworthy.

As the South Moravian Tourism Office continues processing data for the last quarter of 2023, anticipation builds for insights into the impact of Christmas visits to Brno. The forthcoming release of complete mobile data for the year promises a comprehensive understanding of year-round visitor trends in South Moravia, providing a valuable resource for future tourism planning and development. The Czech Statistical Office is set to publish the data in February, offering a conclusive overview of the region’s tourism landscape in 2023.
